A couple were left gobsmacked after discovering a secret room big enough to build a bathroom hidden at the back of their kitchen cupboard.

A woman, whose name and location is unknown, took to Facebook to claim that she and her partner found the room tucked away in the corner of a kitchen cupboard after moving into their new home.

The only way to enter the mystery room is by crawling through a hole-in-the-wall at the back of the cupboard, photographs shared on Facebook show.

After going through the tiny entryway, the hidden room is revealed and is remarkably big enough to stand up in.

The room boasts a large window and it is strewn with rubble, wires and an appliance box, The Sun reported.

But the size of the room and the fact that it can only be accessed through a cupboard have left social media users baffled about what it could be used for.

After making the mysterious discovery, the woman quipped that she was going to leave something strange in the hidden room for the next tenants to find.

Writing on the private Facebook group Things Found In Walls - And Other Hidden Findings, she said: 'Just rented a flat with my boyfriend and found a room inside our kitchen cupboard.'

'Definitely gonna leave something weird in it for the next tenants when we move out.'

Some social media users suggested the woman use the space to get a break from her partner, while other parents joked they would use it to escape from their children.

Another person suggested that the room would be big enough to build a bathroom, despite the small entrance to reach it.

One mother quipped: 'I would turn it into a hideout to study or hide and eat my kids' fave snacks so I wouldn't have to share with my kids.'

Another said: 'I would totally make that into a comfy little hiding spot. Husband getting on your nerves? Run to the hiding spot.'

It is not the first time that an ordinary looking house has attracted attention for coming equipped with a hidden room.

Last month, a couple discovered a secret room hidden behind a wall while they were decorating their dining room and turned it into a bar.

Sarah King, 32, and husband Toby, had decided to give their home in Brighton a fresh lick of paint when they noticed a faint outline of a doorway.

Sarah said: 'We were prepping and sanding the walls of the dining room, ready to paint. We took off some lining paper and sanded, which revealed a very faint outline of a doorway.

'Once we had seen the outline, we couldn't not know.'

With Sarah still furloughed while Toby was out at work as a technical support engineer, she had some free time on her hands to uncover the mystery.

She explained: 'As I uncovered the lintel, I realised that it was not resting on the breeze blocks that were blocking the door. They weren't supporting anything above.'

She managed to chip through the wall and knew there was a room there, but held back until Toby came home to finish it off.

Sarah said: 'I waited until Toby was home to make the final hit to smash down the breeze blocks – in case something was staring back at me!

'It was a tiny room with just a pull-out shelf/desk, some knee pads and a car battery.

'It had electricity to it and believe it or not, hardly any cobwebs and thankfully no spiders.'

Once they found the room, the couple decided it was the perfect space for a bar area, as it sits just off their dining room.
